Report 1/12/17

Post by subeditor » Fri Dec 01, 2017 2:51 pm

Hi everyone it looks like the weekend is shaping up to be quite good out on the water with winds around the 10 knots forecast. There should be plenty of opportunity to fish the bay or head a little wider and chase a few reef fish. In saying that you don’t need to go too far with some very good reports lately of Bar-Cheek Trout around Maggie and the Islands throughout Halifax Bay and the Palm Island group. Working soft plastics or vide style lures around the reef edges or over patches of reef have been working well on these species. The Dogtooth IKA jig is dynamite on these fish but unfortunately they are getting harder and harder to find these days with limited number available Australia wide. We have a hand full left but they never stay on the shelf long. Cleveland Bay has also been fishing well around West Point and Red Rock Bay for grunter of late so it could be well worth a go this weekend with fresh prawn or squid the ideal bait for these quality fish. Another very good table fish the might fingermark have also been playing the game lately with good fish being caught on soft plastics and deep diving lures throughout the daylight hours and during the evenings it is hard to go past a well presented live squid. The numbers of squid should start to increase in coming months and so to the fingermark catches.

I the creeks and rivers this rain should really start to fire up the crabs and even before the rain there was a few nice reports of crabs coming out of the creeks around the Burdekin. Finger crossed it is a great lead up to Christmas and everyone can catch a few over the next few weeks. The Mangrove Jacks have been really fired up over the last few weeks and that doesn’t seemed to of stopped with good report coming from the guys and gals casting soft plastics and lures around the snags. One very successful method of late is the use of surface frog style soft plastics. Greenback herring are also great dead baits for jacks and fingermark in the creeks and river – don’t forget we do have them fresh in store at the moment if you can’t catch any.
