Hi everyone it’s great to be back with the New Year ahead let’s hope we get plenty great weather and the fishing is even better. It looks like the start is shaping up to be just that with winds dropping out over the weekend. There have been plenty of reports of Grey mackerel around Maggie and throughout Halifax Bay in recent weeks. These mackerel are often very frustrating and can prove difficult to get them to take your bait or lures. There is one simple tip I can give you when chasing Grey mackerel if you can get a close look at the bait fish they are feeding on and match the size profile with a lure or metal slice much like you need to do with many of the tuna species you will find you will improve your hookup rate significantly. These mackerel a great fighter and also very nice table fish so good luck hope you can land a few over the weekend.

Xavier and Joshua love there fishing and on a recent trip onboard their poppy’s boat managed to have a great day catching this nice Spanish mackerel and plenty of trout.

The deeper shoals in 30 to 40m of water have been fishing quite well lately with good numbers of largemouth nannygai willing to take squid baits and in particular if you can jig up a few live baits they want last long send down over these areas.

Closer inshore the Cleveland and Halifax Bay have been producing a few quality grunter over the last few weeks around the changes in the tides. Fresh slab baits and big prawns have been working well. There have also been a few reports of fingermark willing to take lures and jigs around the back of Maggie and Cape Cleveland.

The creeks are still producing nice Jacks and fingermark around the mouths of the creeks with live greenback herring working best.

The little bit of rain has also pushed a few crabs around with some nice ones being caught in recent weeks with the creeks in the Burdekin like Plantation and Ocean crabbing quite well of late.

Matthew is hooked now after catching his first ever fish although it was under size and released after the photo it still very exciting to catch your first fish.
