Report 28/6/18

Post by subeditor » Thu Jun 28, 2018 3:47 pm

Hi everyone with the winds remaining up around the 15 to 20 knots those offshore species are safe again this weekend with most of the fishing activity likely to be confined to the creeks and rivers.

Creeks, Rivers & Beaches
This time of year is a great time to take the kids fishing with plenty of winter species like bream, whiting and flathead around during this time of year. In recent days there has been some of the biggest bream I have seen in many years caught with a pikey around the 1.5kg brought into the store and yes that is the biggest pikey bream I have ever seen. Bream are often found in schools so the trick to a good catch is to try to get the school to stay around your fishing area for as long as possible and the best way to do this is by using burly. Fresh prawn, mullet fillet and chicken breast are all great baits when chasing beam.
In terms of whiting like last week most of the beaches around Townsville and the Burdekin have been producing some nice fish. There has also been plenty of elbow slapper whiting caught on both poppers and baits at Horseshoe Bay on Magnetic Island recently.
Prawn style soft plastics seem to be the preferred pattern for flathead over the last few days.

Bay and Inshore
With the wind direction really dictating were the smaller boats can and can’t go the reports have been very light on in recent days.
Zack caught this monster mangrove jack on light gear while fishing one of his secret spots

Chelsey was very excited to land this nice barra on a recent trip.

As per last weekend with the winds up around the 15 to 20 knots there has been very little opportunity to heading offshore and as a result not much to report this week
Paul had a great day out on the water off Forest Beach landing this very nice Spanish mackerel.

Not a lot to report this week due to the weather but the inshore diving continues to be the only real option of late with a few fingermark and barra seen around the Island.
If you are heading out over the weekend - all the best, take care and never take more than you need.
