Report Thur 22nd Feb 07

Post by Brad » Fri Feb 23, 2007 4:49 am

With the rain still making an appearance every couple of days there is still enough water going over the weirs in Ross River to keep the fish interested, with most of the reports of barra and mangrove jacks coming from Black and Aplins weirs. Shallow diving lures with a loud rattle like the Cultiva Savoy minnow are working wonders in these areas at the moment. Early morning and late afternoon surface lures like the Tango Dancer are also accounting for quite a few fish. The barra are also still responding quite well to the shad tail soft plastics like the Storm Wild Eyes and Squidgy Slick Rigs.

The pick of the live baits at the moment, particularly if you are after the larger barra over a metre, is the great little fighting fish itself, the humble tarpon. Live tarpon around the 20 to 30cm have already this season accounted for many metre plus fish at Aplins Weir.

Cattle creek has been producing some nice barra on lures and grunter on fresh prawns and strip baits.

Peter Faust Dam has been on fire lately with most who have fished it in recent times talking of some great fishing action. One such report only days ago told of five casts resulting in five metre plus fish, early morning, on surface lures - now that’s fishing.

There have been some reports of javelin fish (grunter) to 60cm at Cape Cleveland with garfish fillets being the bait of choice.

With the unfavourable weather lately there is little to report outside of the Bay. One thing I can however report is the large number of large trees and floating logs offshore at the moment. So if you are heading out over the next couple of weeks make sure you keep your eyes peeled.

The base of Aplins Weir still seems the place to be at the moment, if you can stand the crowds, with the early morning high tides on both Saturday and Sunday looking the best.

Play Safe
