Report Monday 12 Jun 07

LAND BASED
The rock walls in and around Ross creek and the marina have been producing some nice bream and small trevally on small soft plastics. There have been a few reports of grunter caught on large prawns around the Casino wall and rock pool on the stand. Pallarenda has also been producing the odd grunter and salmon.

INSHORE
It is likely to be a very busy long weekend on the water particularly around the Haughton River area with the Giru International Fishing Classic kicking off from midnight today, and the North Queensland Sport fishing Championships being held in the Hinchinbrook area also. The most recent reports indicate that the crabs particularly after the rain are on the move. There are crabs everywhere at the moment with the Haughton River and Morressey creeks producing plenty of quality specimens. The reports from the creeks and rivers running into Cleveland bay also indicate plenty of crabs but there seems to be quite a lot of undersize (mill or two under) in these areas. Before the drop in temperature there were still a few barra getting caught on live prawn, however with the sudden drop in temperature and the cold rain running into the creeks I would expect the water temperature to drop suddenly making it even more challenging to entice the barra to slurp down your live baits. However this drop in temperature should really bring on the large yellow fin bream and grunter. There have been some good reports of these species recently with Plantation creek near Ayr producing some great bream while Crocy has been producing some exceptional grunter.

OFFSHORE & BAY
Due to the winds offshore and the Fishing and Outdoor Expo last weekend there is very little to report. However for those that did sneak out the reports indicate plenty of Spanish mackerel with trolled quality gar producing some great fish. West Point has started to fire up with plenty of Queensland school mackerel (doggies) turning up recently and I would expect that to continue with the sudden temperature drop.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
Get out early morning around West Point (Magnetic Island) set up a good berley trail and float a few pilchards for Queensland School mackerel (doggies). But if you prefer to be on the move try trolling a few 120-125mm Halco laser pros or scorpions.

PLAY SAFE
