Report 19 Aug 07

LAND BASED
A few of the bridges in and around town have been producing some nice bream on small soft plastics. There has also been some quality flathead landed at the mouth the Haughton and along the banks of Phillips landing.

INSHORE
The good news is the slight rise in water temperature with the Haughton and Morresys starting to produce some reasonable barra lure casting sessions. The shallow banks out of the wind seem to be the places to work at the moment. There also seems to be plenty of large barra marking up on the sounder but a little harder to entire to feed than the fish feeding up in the warmer shallow water. But as the temperatures rise there should be some quality Barra getting caught in the coming months

There has also been some very nice dusky flathead around recently with quite a few reports of fish over the maximum size limit of 70cm being caught. The dusky is the most commonly caught flathead species caught in this area. The best way to identify them is via the round spot on the tail. Remember they do have a minimum size limit of 40cm and a maximum size limit of 70cm.

There also seems to be some big schools of black bream around at the moment but they are patchy and seem to be concentrated on certain snags. So don’t be afraid to move around until you find them.

The run of quality prawns continue in the Bohle with a few reports of filling a 10lt bucket (possession limit) in as little as 3 casts, now that’s thick. However despite the amount of bait in the Bohle I have not heard of any Barra or Jack reports this week from there. However the bream and whiting are still making an appearance and there have been some good Dewfish caught in some of the deeper holes.

OFFSHORE & BAY
It hasn’t been the best of conditions offshore lately however those that have managed to get offshore have reported some great catches.
Les the skip of “Turning Point” has been rather busy lately with 16 out of the last 19 spent at sea and he says the fishing has been excellent with small mouth nannygai schooled up in big numbers on most shoals. The large mouth nannygai (much better eating fish) haven’t been everywhere but when they have found them they have been big and in good numbers. Spangled emperor have also been thick and the Red emperor numbers have been very good with some very good 10kg fish amongst the catch.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
The winds will once again make it hard to get offshore and the tides will have very little run but with the increasing reports of Barra catches on lure in the Haughton and Morrissey lately if you just have to go fishing I would be looking at flicking a few lures for Barra. The Koolabung lures have been working wonder lately.
