Weekly Report 13 Sep 07

LAND BASED
Once again this week the land based reports have been a quite with only a few reports of Barra in the Ross River weirs with the surface lures like the Tango Dancer working at the moment. The rock walls around the Casino continue to produce the odd Barra.

INSHORE
The reports of grunter have been a little slow lately with only a few coming from Morrissey creek with large fresh prawn and wolf herring strip baits accounting for most fish. Yes wolf herring strips so next time you troll those wolf herring for Spanish mackerel and the tail gets snipped off don’t though the front section over board, keep it on ice for you next grunter trip. The Bohle has been producing the odd Barra on lures and live baits. While the Haughton was a little slow last weekend with the slower tidal run this weekend I would expect better catches. I tend to have more successful lure casting sessions on Barra on these tides particularly in the Haughton. There has been very little in the way of reports on crabs.

OFFSHORE & BAY
Although the conditions last weekend weren’t as good as expected some boats got offshore with reports being a little patchy with mixed success on coral trout and red emperor. The Spanish mackerel were also a little on the quite side last weekend with only a few reports of fish caught around Salamander Reef, the Mackerel Patches in Bowling Green Bay and the 12mile shoal of the Burdekin. There has been the odd report of Finger mark starting to trickle in and here’s hoping it’s a great season on finger mark, one of my favourite fish. There still has been very little in the way of Billfish this year, don’t now what’s going on there, but I am sure there will be plenty of theories.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
Buoy weather predicts a flat weekend on the water so with the Coral Reef Fin Fish Closures only 3 weekends away I would make the best of the conditions and do a spot of bottom bashing for trout and reds (early morning tides). If you prefer a spot of Bay fishing then try flicking and jigging a few soft plastics around Magnetic Island and Burdekin Rock for Finger Mark. Neap tides are ideal times for chasing finger mark on soft plastics (afternoon tides).
