Weekly Report 10 Nov 07

Post by Brad » Sat Nov 10, 2007 11:10 am

LAND BASED
There have been a few reports of quality queenfish being caught off Pallarenda Beach on live garfish, if you can't get live garfish then garfish fillets are not a bad option. The Northern Beaches have been producing some good whiting catches recently with Balgal Beach being the pick of the spots for these fish at the moment.

INSHORE
The Hinchinbrook channel continues to fish quite well with reports of some exceptional grunter and quality fingermark. Live mullet seem to be the pick of the baits for fingermark in the Channel. Live Squid are notorious for being the preferred bait for fingermark but some very good local fishers tell me live mullet will out fish squid in the Channel any day. I guess it's probably the most natural bait in the area The grunter and fingermark catches have continued in most of the creeks and rivers around Townsville. There has also been the odd black jewfish caught recently in the deep whole behind Bowling Green Spit and also in a number of the deeper creeks running into Bowling Green Bay. The Haughton and the Bohle has been producing some very nice blue salmon and some exceptional threadfin salmon recently with reports of some great catches on soft plastics. If you enjoy a bit of light tackle fishing then the Bohle is full of tarpon at the moment with the small Cultiva lures like the rip'n minnow and mira shads going off on these fish. They aren't much chop on the dinner plate but are get fighters and an absolute ball on light gear.

OFFSHORE & BAY
With the Coral Reef fin fish closure in place for the last week there is very little to report on the offshore scene.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
The new moon tomorrow night and with the daytime tides having less than 1.5m of run in them the inshore fishing should be quite good. The Haughton River should produce some quality Mangrove Jack and salmon this weekend.
