Weekly Report 6 Dec 07

Post by Brad » Thu Dec 06, 2007 4:43 pm

Very little to report on the land based scene with only a few tarpon getting caught on small surface poppers in the Fairfield lakes area. With the rain we have recently there has also been a few pink eyed salmon caught and released in the lagoons and drains though out the Burdekin area.

Reports of crabs have continued with some very good crabs coming from the Barratta and Morrissey creek. Plantation creek in the Burdekin area has also been producing some nice crabs also. The reports from the Haughton suggest that the crabs don't seem to have the same condition with quite a lot being floaters (empty). There is also a few prawns starting to show up in most of the creeks and rivers, however at the moment they seem to be a little on the smallish side. Give them a few weeks and they should be just the right size for a feed just in time for
Christmas. The Bohle has been producing some very nice pikey bream recently with fresh prawns working the best. There has also been a few nice Mangrove Jacks caught there recently also with live herring and poddy mullet doing the trick. A keen angler showed me photos yesterday of a Barra he caught on Tuesday hand casting lures in Morrissey creek. It went 128cm, it was a monster and would have to be the biggest saltwater Barra I have every seen caught hand casting. The fish was handled with great care and released unharmed.

There isn't a lot to report due to the "Coral Reef Fin Fish" closure and the average conditions on the water. Of those that managed to get out during the week there has been some nice fingermark on offer with plenty being caught on deep diving lures, soft plastics and live fingermark, fingers crossed. We are currently nearing the end of the last 9 day "Coral Reef Finfish Closure" for the year with Tuesday being the last day. Then all we have to worry about then is the weather.

The crabs seem to be the go at the moment and with the weather the way it is I would look at doing a spot of crabbing with Morrissey and Plantation creeks probably being the pick. There also seems to be a few nice pikey bream and mangrove jacks around also so try setting up on a nice snag around the change in the tides.
Play Safe
