Weekly Report 25 Jul 13

The strong winds don’t look like letting up this weekend so if you are looking at wetting a line then the creeks and rivers look you’re your only option. With the cooler conditions this week the bream numbers have improved with plenty of pikey bream willing to take fresh prawn or mullet fillets. Nice deep banks often associated with the taller mangroves are great places to get a good feed of pikey bream. There have also been a few reports of some nice yellow fin bream starting to show up around the 1kg mark which is great news for all the bread and butter fishers out there. One bait worth trying when the larger bream become a little finicky is a nice soft strip of chicken breast and on top of that one of the best tips I can give you when cashing bream is to make sure you have a nice berley pot set on the bottom just under you boat, this will draw fish to you in no time.

The reports from around the Burdekin and many of the creeks running into Bowling Green Bay suggest that the grunter are on the move with some good catches reported in recent weeks. Many of the popular spots in the bay have been producing some very nice fish on small live baits or fresh stripe baits. One bait that works exceptionally well on the big bay grunter is wolf herring fillets. So next time you are trolling a few wolf herring for Spanish mackerel and you get a few cop offs don't throw the remaining wolf herring over board keep it for slab baits when next you might think about chasing a few grunter. In terms of live baits small garfish are dynamite on the larger grunter that start to show up over the next few month. It's just being able to catch them that makes this bait a little hard to get at times.
