Report 01/08/14

LAND BASED
For the sweet water fisherman there have been reports of some very nice sooty grunter and jungle perch getting around in the nice, clear lagoons at the tops of the rivers north of Townsville. Small topwater lures such as poppers and fizzers are great for sootys, and it’s a very visual and exciting way to fish. Small hard body minnows and grub tail soft plastics in natural colours are great for targeting jungle perch, which are a naturally flighty species and a great reward for your efforts on lures.
There have been a few reports of good grunters being caught off the beaches, a little out of the ordinary, but well worth having a larger slab bait out when down the beaches chasing a whiting or flathead, which are still getting around in good numbers as well.

INSHORE
The barra have started to fire back up, and live baits have accounted for a few of the larger fish. Putting the effort in to catch a few livies is usually rewarded with a nice fish. The smaller tides this weekend certainly favour fishing for mangrove jacks in the snags, slabs of mud herring, mullet or chunks of pilchards are the better baits for jacks. Large flathead have made their presence known in the creeks, always willing to take a lure and put up a great fight. Look for the edge of sandbars and shallow water drains where the flathead will be sitting, DOA prawn lures would have to be the best for this and are just dynamite on the flathead. The fingermark have also been caught in the deeper holes and ledges in the creeks, using soft plastics and soft vibes are a good way to target these very aggressive fish.

OFFSHORE & BAY
The weather hasn’t been the greatest in recent weeks, but with these couple of perfect days there should be plenty of boats getting out and able to catch a few nice Spanish mackerel and a great bag of reef fish. Big red emperor have been inhabiting the shallower waters closer to the reefs in the cooler months, so have a look around the 20 to 30 meter mark, a big squid or cuttlefish head will be a dynamite bait at night time.
There have still been plenty of school mackerel getting around the bay and in particular the shipping channel markers, trolling slightly smaller metallic lures will be a good option. A great sport fish, queenfish have also been about in good numbers and always fight hard, they’ll generally hang around structure and bait.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
The wind will be back up sharply this weekend, so once again the creeks will be the place to be, and with very little run in the tide fishing the snags and keeping your bait in the strike zone will be a lot easier.

Have a great weekend
