Report 22/1/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Jan 23, 2015 9:42 am

This month the Tackle World Challenge is to catch a Coral Trout.
Simply email your Coral Trout photos to to be in the running for the $250 Tackle World Tackle Pack.

With the stormy weather that has been hanging around, there has been good numbers of jacks being caught in most of the local creeks and rivers. The rain has started to get the bait moving firing up the jacks and other creek species such as threadfin salmon feeding at the mouths of the small gutters and drains emptying out into the main creek. Prawn imitation lures have been working a treat using a lightly weighted jighead to allow the plastic to swim naturally along with the current. Check out the extremely natural looking Fuze prawn head soft baits which are the latest addition to the Fuze soft plastic range, they are a perfect plastic for flicking the drains this time of year.

Before the storms have been coming in each day around mid-afternoon, there has been a few opportunistic fisherman taking advantage of the calm seas and heading into the bay in chase of some quality fingermark that have been getting around of late. Soft plastics and vibes have been accounting for many of the captures. However most of the larger fish seem to be falling for a big fresh bait such as whole squid or cuttlefish head and if you can get some live ones all the better.

There hasn’t been many reports coming in from the reef, but the few boats that have headed out haven’t had a real lot to report. As is every year during this time, the warmer waters and northerly winds tend to ruin most reef fishing plans to fill the ice boxes. Those able to find a few fish have found them in the deeper waters away from the reefs. There have however been a few nice Spanish mackerels still being caught off a floating pilchard, always a welcome addition to the ice box.

The weather gods won’t be shining down this weekend it would seem, as they have forecasted plenty of rain to land over the long weekend. But if there is a small window to hit the water than the creeks would be a good option with plenty of bait bound to be on the move. Also don’t forget to take the crab pots, as with the rain the mud crabs will also be on the move.
