Report 5/2/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Feb 05, 2015 11:34 am

This month the Tackle World Challenge is to catch a Coral Trout.
Time is running out to get your Coral Trout photos to me ( to be in the running for the $250 Tackle World Tackle Pack.

After recent rain the mud crab reports have been coming in thick and fast with heaps of good quality crabs being caught from most creeks and rivers. The rains have also stirred up the prawns with plenty of good size ones for a feed or some of the best bait on the planet the live prawn.
It is also worth mentioning a few reports of monster flathead in a number of the creeks throughout the Burdekin with both baits and soft plastics working a treat, just remember flathead have a maximum size limit of 75cm and from the reports you will need to measure them as many have been around this maximum mark.

The fingermark catches have continued with good catches reported during the calmer conditions last week. It is also worth mentioning there has also been the odd large jewfish being caught in similar areas throughout the bay as the fingermark.

There has been plenty of long tail tuna boiling up around the Island groups and offshore around the shoals. These fish are great fun on light gear it’s can just be a little hard to get close enough to them before they dive. If you find this is the case and you find them spooking easily it is often best to try to anticipate were they will come up next and set you boat in the area with the engine turned off. You must also match the hatch with these fish and all that means is use slices or metals that are similar in size to what they are feeding on so it might just be a case of trying a few sizes before you find the right one.
The Spanish mackerel are still showing up from time to time which is unusual for this time of year but no one is complaining. The rocky headlands are producing the odd fish around the 10kg mark on lures but the key seems to be getting the lures down deep.

In terms of the reef from all reports it has been quite patchy of late probably due to the extremely hot days so if you are heading out for a spot of bottom bashing the best results seem to be coming from those that are fishing the deeper water around 40m mark.

Dust off the Barra gear and get ready for a cracker of a barra season with the season opening this Sunday at midday. If the early mornings are calm then a spot of trolling around the back of Maggie or the Cape could result in a mackerel or two.
Also don’t forget to take the crab pots, as with the rain the mud crabs will also be on the move.

Barramundi Season Opens midday Sunday 1st February

Limited Edition Classic Lures: We currently have all 7 of the released limited edition classic barra lures in stock with only three more colours to be released in coming months now is your chance to collect all 7 at once with our current sale on lures at 20% off. Once they are gone there will be no more.

Have a great weekend
