Report 13/2/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Feb 13, 2015 10:05 am

This month the Tackle World Challenge is to catch a fish on a Koolabung Soft Vibe.
Simply email your photos to to be in the running for the $250 Tackle World Tackle Pack.

Keep praying for the rain to arrive – we need it. The Barras won’t fire unless we do; the rain will get the fish on the move and rejuvenate the estuary systems with a good wash out, what they all need. So without the rain, the weirs haven’t consistently flowed over, so the land based fisherman haven’t had too much to cheer about unfortunately, and because of the high winds the beaches haven’t been the place to be of late either, so heading up into the sweet water reaches of the rivers has proven a little more eventful, with plenty of sooty grunters getting caught. Any lure placed in the right area will get a sooty’s attention. Anything smaller enough to fit in their mouth, they’ll try and eat, a great little sport fish.

Don’t be too deterred from getting the tinny out on the water, there has still been the odd nice king salmon (threadfin) getting around, along with some quality grunter and jacks. Putting the extra effort into catching some live bait would be well worth it, especially this time of year, with plenty of large prawns and mullets getting around, the best castnet for catching prawns is a top pocket net with a large spread. Live bait is definitely the best option for barras when they’re a little bit quieter. Don’t forget to take the crab pots as well, the crabs are starting to move and are nice and full, if they manage to find their way into the pots. Using nice big baits and placing the pots at the mouths of the gutters and drains is the best bet.

Once again the forecast for this weekend is a wet and windy one. Sunday looks to be the least wet, bonus would be if we do get as much rain as they are predicting for Friday/Saturday then the crabs will definitely be on the move. Hopefully this will also fire the barras up, but stick to live bait for your best opportunity to land a nice Barra.
