Report 13/3/15

THE ROUNDUP
There have been plenty of bigger barras getting around but have been mainly found around the mouths of the creeks, even along the beaches or sand flats around locally. If focusing a lot of effort in the shallows, using a shallow running suspending lure would be a good option. Strada has a new lure out called the Zeus which would fit perfectly with plenty of natural colours and a very unique action, making it very hard for barra to resist. The jacks fired up over the last week as well, with plenty of fisho’s that were focusing their efforts around structure reporting good numbers getting caught, and some quality fish at that, around the 40cm mark. Jacks being as aggressive as they are, if you’re putting your lure or bait in the right areas, you’re bound to run into a couple.

Reports from the bay and around the islands have been good for the popper fisherman, with some big giant trevally around. Poppers around the 120-160mm size range have been popular. When chasing GT’s focus where you’re fishing to pressure points around the rocks and fringing reefs, remember these points will change depending on the tide. The anglers trolling deep diving hard bodies around the bay and the night time bait fisherman have still been reporting decent enough numbers of fingermark being caught.

Some good weather of late has meant plenty of boats heading to the reef. There weren’t many boats ‘bagging out’ but a few catching enough for a good feed of fish. Those boats that were catching however were working hard for their catch, moving around often. There were some bigger trouts getting caught and plenty of red throat emperor. There were boats recording plenty of the lesser favoured small mouth nannygai and not many of the quality largemouth. Many of the boats out overnight also complained of the sharks, boating only a couple red emperor. Moving from spot to spot and trolling hard bodies in between paid off with plenty of nice Spanish mackerel being caught. The Shoals in close were also riddled with small tuna, great fun on light line and small spin outfits. Follow the birds, and you’ll find the tuna.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
The wind is back up a little this weekend, the bigger boats may still be heading to the reef for Saturday at least. Full moon on Friday should have the mackerels fired up as well. The creeks will be a good option also with slightly smaller tides by Sunday. Chasing jacks in the snags should prove rewarding, the smaller barras will also be getting around in the same areas, if wanting to cast around a few lures use small hard bodies and work them through the timber. The mouths of the creeks will also be a good spot if wanting to chase a few grunter as well, cuttlefish heads are a perfect bait.
