Report 19/3/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Mar 19, 2015 11:58 am

This month the Tackle World Challenge is to catch a queenfish or trevally. There has been some great photos sent in so far. So if you want to join the challenge just simply catch one of these fish and email your photo to us or post it on our facebook page for your chance to win the $250 Tackle Pack
THE ROUNDUP
The looming low pressure system has definitely fired the big barra up, with plenty being caught around the 90cm mark. Bigger profile vibes, much like the Koolabung Barra Bouncers have been accounting for many of these bigger fish, worked slower in the deeper holes and around rock bars. Live bait has also been a good way to go with the big mud herrings being the preferred bait, although a little harder to find this time of year, those anglers live baiting have noted that they have caught a lot more on them over any other option. Mangrove jacks always tend to fire up when the weather is a little rainy or stormy as well. Smaller profile hard body lures, worked tight around the structure have been proving successful, with the all aggressive mangrove jack finding it hard to resist when placed right in their territory.

Boats heading out around the headlands and in the bay have also reported a few barras, but plenty of big queenfish and trevallies have been chasing bait. Great fun for the guys casting poppers and small stickbaits on 30lb gear. The fingermark have started to quieten, but the grunters are still firing on the rubble patches. The structures, such as the shipping pilons have produced plenty of fun for those chasing a little sport, with some decent golden trevallies and cobia hanging around in close.

The boats that headed offshore before the wind picked up over the past weekend noted some better catches of trout and plenty of red throats, metal jigs once again accounted for many of the trout captures during the day outside of your standard bottom bouncing with bait. Fishing deeper water produced the odd nice red emperor, and a few large mouth nannygai. The wreck bashers as always noted too many sharks around to see anything of quality come to the surface.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
The wind is right up this weekend or at least until late Sunday and unsuitable for heading offshore, so stick to the creeks and head right up to the upper reaches of the creeks, fingers crossed we get some rain to get the predatory fish moving up the creeks waiting for the runoff in search of bait. There have been plenty of big banana prawns around as well, enough to catch a good feed, hopefully the winds will push the prawns into the creeks. Top pocket cast-nets are the best option when chasing prawns because the prawns escape to the surface and will be trapped in the top pocket, a big spread such as a 12 foot net is a good ideas as well, catching as many as possible in a couple of throws.

INFO BOARD - Checkout our website for many of the local anglers taking up the "Tackle World Challenge". So get involved I dare you!

Burdekin barra rush fishing competition is to be held on the 28th and 29th of march 2015, fingers crossed that it does not rain.

Have a great weekend

Herbie Boland had a ball recently landing this impressive queenfish from one of the beaches near Lucinda. It took a live bait, Herbie, we hear you caught it on a rod good work from a hand line guy.

Darcey Viero was very excited to get this nice barra ashore after it took a live mullet while fishing of the rock wall near the Casino.
