Report 2/4/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Apr 02, 2015 2:10 pm

This month the Tackle World Challenge is to catch a red emperor or nannygai. So if you want to join the challenge just simply catch one of these fish and email your photo to us or post it on our facebook page for your chance to win the $250 Tackle Pack
There have been plenty of jacks getting around lately with plenty of prawn and smaller herring sticking tight to the banks with heavy structure. Casting smaller profile hard body lures and plastics close into heavy structure is bound to produce a few heavy strikes from the ever aggressive mangrove jack. The local creeks and the Hinchinbrook Channel have been consistently producing the best jack fishing of late. Reports have also been coming in with plenty of creek sized fingermark being caught in the deeper drop offs of the creeks, small vibe style lures, metal blades and small soft plastics are great options when chasing fingermark. In the same areas there has still been more than the odd nice grunter being caught as well, the same lures would be just as effective. The live baiters have also been having a ball with plenty of bait available to catch; there have been some good captures of barra as well.

The bay has been a little quiet of late with the winds up and very few opting to head out, but it won’t be long until the smaller mackerels start showing up in numbers, there have been some solid signs already that this should be a good year for the mackerels. With the weather looking a lot better in the coming week there should be plenty of opportunity for the smaller boats to head out into the bay for a look, especially around the shipping pylons.

As with the bay we haven’t received too many reports from out at the reef over the past week mainly due to the weather, with even many of the bigger boats opting out and saving their trips for the upcoming Easter break. The boys from Northern Conquest Charters have been seeing plenty of trouts and large mouth nannygai coming aboard from the deeper waters around the reef edges. On the leading edges of the reefs (current facing) there has been plenty of bait seen from fusiliers to yakkas, so there should be some good pelagic action in the area with Spanish mackerel and GT’s being great sport to catch. Trolling gars on wog head rigs and wolfies with chinguards is the best options for catching mackerel, and poppers or stick baits cast in towards the reefs where the bait is present and being chased is the perfect recipe when wanting to tussle with the mighty GT.

Weather is looking great for Easter (woohoo!) with clear conditions and light winds forecasted, it’s a perfect opportunity to get the mates and family offshore, or for those with smaller boats, the bay, cape Cleveland and closer islands are good options also. There have been plenty of big Spanish mackerel getting around in close so don’t forget to take plenty of garfish and fresh wolfies with you to troll around.
