Report 17/4/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Apr 17, 2015 1:04 pm

This month the Tackle World Challenge is to catch a red emperor or nannygai. So if you want to join the challenge just simply catch one of these fish and email your photo to us or post it on our facebook page for your chance to win the $250 Tackle Pack
THE ROUNDUP
With the school holidays about the creeks have been busy, and the reports have been flooding in. There have been plenty of barra, jacks, salmon and smaller fingermark about in the creeks, keeping the whole family happy. Soaking a few baits around bigger snags away from the banks has been producing good numbers of bream, smaller fingermark and even the odd quality grunter as well. The salmon and bigger barras have been concentrated in the deeper snags and ledges, the boats live baiting have been fairing quite well, as are the lure anglers, jigging soft vibes and other plastics where bait has been sounded up, trolling hard bodies is another great option in these areas. Bigger profile hard bodies are great trolling lures and the Strada Tera 125 is perfect for this, this lure has accounted for plenty of big barra captures in the local creeks, the Tera is also the number one big barra lure in the Northern Territory.

The weather hasn’t been great recently with the wind up so the smaller boats haven’t had many chances to head out into the bay. Those that took advantage of small breaks in the wind, the reports are that there has been a lot of smaller nannygai around the shipping pylons and other structures, the odd big fingermark was also recorded for the lucky ones, with squid baits and cuttlefish being the best options.

With the average wind forecasts there also hasn’t been much opportunity to head to the reef. The weather was however good over the Easter weekend, so the reports come in thick and fast from the reef then. There were plenty of big Spanish mackerels around both the shoals and reefs, the winter season looks as though it’s going to be a very good one for the pelagics, here’s hoping. The coral trout were also around in very good numbers in closer to the reef edges. The red throats have started to slow down, the red emperor and large mouth nannygai should also begin to move into the slightly shallower in the coming months.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
With the winds back up the creeks will be the place to wet a line. The crabs have been getting around in good numbers and are nice and full during this time of year as well, so don’t forget to take the crab pots. The tides this weekend will provide a good chance to troll up a few bigger barras, don’t forget the Tera 125 for your arsenal either.

Have a great weekend
