Report 23/4/15

THE ROUNDUP
The estuaries have quietened down a little of late with the cool change that has come through. But with that the whiting have been present in numbers and good sized fish as well. Most of the northern beaches have been producing the best numbers with live yabbies being great bait, but if unable to find any or if the tide doesn’t drop out far enough, then small peeled prawns are a great second option. Rigging with small red beads and red tubing work really well for whiting just giving that extra little bit of attractant. Chasing whiting on small poppers is another great way to target them and is visually exciting. Small clear natural coloured poppers are a good option, when working the lure quick sharp continuous movements are the best way to get the bite, and don’t be surprised if a solid flathead latches on as there have been plenty around as well.

There haven’t been any reports of small school mackerel in the bay yet, but they shouldn’t be too far off, there are still plenty of small nannygai around but majority are slightly undersize. Around the headlands and islands there has been some very nice bar-cheek trout caught recently on both baits and jigs or soft plastics. Small knife jigs and bright coloured soft plastics work well, trouts are very aggressive and will sometimes follow your jig or soft plastic all the way to the top.

There haven’t been many reports coming in from the reef due to the lack of calm weather recently, but this weekend looks like it’s going to be a good chance to head out for a look. The bottom fish will start to move into the shallows as the weather starts to cool down, there have plenty of solid mackerels around the reef edges where the current is most prominent pushing the bait to the surface. In the same areas there have been some solid GT’s lurking around as well.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
The weather this weekend looks very good for Saturday at least, there does look to be a heavy southerly due Sunday morning so check the current and live forecast before heading out. Heading offshore Saturday, the shoals have produced a few very good mackerel of late, they’re only going to start coming on better with plenty of bait and cooler weather about. The beaches are also going to be a great spot to take the family for a half day outing, whiting, bream and flathead will be the target species, great fun for the kids.

Have a great weekend

Darius Topp had a ball casting poppers around Fantom Island when this nice GT climbed on. I hear it was his first fish on a popper.
