Report 7/8/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Aug 07, 2015 2:15 pm

This month (August) the Tackle World Challenge goes out to all the ladies that love their fishing. Simply catch a fish any fish send the photo to me at danny@tackleworldtownsville.com.au for your chance to win the $250 Tackle Pack.
THE ROUNDUP
We’ve started to get a few good reports of good numbers and quality sized barras in the creeks lately. The mouths of the creeks have been fishing the best where there has been plenty of bait hanging around. The jacks have also been firing taking surface and soft plastics among the snags for the lure angler, there has also been a few reports coming from the breakwater walls of some bigger jacks taking pilchard baits. The upper reaches of the Ross River in the fresh water has started to produce some average sized barra around the 60cm mark, but plenty of good sport on surface and suspending lures. With fresh water barras especially when the temperature is a little cooler it’s a good tip to work you lures nice and slow.

The doggy mackerel are still around in good numbers near the weed beds at Cape Cleveland and West Point, trolling small profile lures that dive a little deeper around 130mm size in a nice metallic finish are a great option. Don’t forget that doggy mackerel aren’t as likely to bite through a tough leader material; you’ll definitely get more bites with a fluoro leader than a wire trace. Small pilchards on a set of gang hooks also work a treat when floated back through a burley trail whilst anchored up. It won’t be long until we start seeing the grey mackerel coming in shore as well.

The boats lucky enough to take advantage of the good weather during the week had plenty to report. Some really nice red emperor has been getting caught out wide of the reefs and plenty of large mouth nannygai during the day. There haven’t been as many reports on the trouts as the sharks have been a nuisance in closer to the reefs. In closer to shore around the islands and headlands there have been some really good sized bar-cheek trouts getting caught, and for those trolling big wolfies and gars there have been some solid Spanish Mackerel around the 20kg mark getting caught.

SUGGESTED SPOTS THIS WEEKEND
The weather isn’t looking too bad this weekend, there will be a few bigger boats looking to head out onto the shoals this weekend chasing a few of the small black marlin and sailfish that have been starting to show up. Small pushers (skirted lures) have been working a treat, trolled over bait schools that you sound up. The bay will also be a great option early in the mornings chasing a few school mackerel. With a little bit of run in the tides this weekend the creeks will be another great option to wet a line.
