We have been enjoying some great weather lately and it looks like continuing with good conditions right through the weekend into next week. The next few months are great fishing months with both offshore fishing and inshore bay fishing at its best. Offshore there has been good coral trout and lippers caught bottom bashing the reef.
It is also one of my favourite times for chasing grunter with good reports of quality fish being caught around the mouths of many of the creeks running into Bowling Green Bay. Just inside Cape Cleveland and West Point are also great places to chasing these great fish. Fresh slab baits and squid strips work very well in these areas.
In recent weeks there has also been the odd report of black jew coming from the deeper wholes in the creeks and rivers around Townsville and the Burdekin.
With the Mike Carney Toyota Billfish Challenge in full swing and the nice weather I am sure all involved are having a great time. Only one thing wrong I am not out there. The mackerel and billfish have been found around many of the bait balls between Maggie shoals and Cape Bowling Green in recent weeks. Still good reports of fish around the 20kg mark in these areas. Skipping garfish and/or small pusher styles lures are great options for billfish.
SUGGESTED SPOT THIS WEEKEND
Once again with the good weather there should be plenty of options for boats fishing inshore for school mackerel or grunter and for those looking to head further offshore chasing reef species.
INFO BOARD - The Mike Carney Toyota Billfish Challenge is in full swing - head to the Townsville Game Fishing Clubs website (http://www.tgfc.org) for all the details.
Have a great weekend
