Report 22/1/16

The estuaries have been fishing well lately with plenty of bait around to stir things up. There have been plenty of smaller creeks sized fingermarks getting caught on soft vibes such as the Fuze Pulse worked of the bottom in the deeper areas where the bait has been holding, being able to utilise a depth sounder is key when looking to target these fish. In the same areas there have been good reports of quality grunters and the odd threadfin salmon, which are both good indicators of the quality of baitfish that is around in the creeks at the moment. The bait has been namely smaller sized herrings, which don’t survive to make the best live baits, but are perfect fresh slab baits that mangrove jacks can barely resist.

Moving out of the creeks a little bit, the water is still very clean in the bay, having not had a lot of rain, so there are still some big grey mackerel getting caught. Small hard body lures trolled around the edges of the headlands and/or structure like the shipping channel markers has been the better options. If there is bait being harassed on the surface casting small metals and jigs like the Arma Anchovy into the school from a distance has been snagging the odd big mackerel too, there has also been a few line burning longtail tunas mixed in around these bait schools as well.

The weather is shaping up to be not too bad for the offshore boaties this weekend, but Saturday is definitely the pick to head out to the reef. Always check an updated forecast before heading out onto the water. Large fresh cuttlefish baits work a treat on big red emperor and large mouth nannygai, fishing deeper water around the 80m mark is where you’re most likely to find the big reds this time of year.
With the calmer winds the beaches would be another great option, the northern beaches (Bluewater etc) have been fishing well around the mouths of all the tiny feeder creeks, with plenty of grunter and big flathead being caught, a great day out for the family.
