There has been plenty of nice sized grey mackerel getting around the headlands and Magnetic Island of late, with plenty of small bait getting around it looks like they’ll be sticking around. Smaller hard body lures trolled and pilchards on a floating set of gangs are a great bet once you locate where the fish will be hanging. The weather is unfavourable this weekend for the offshore boatie but looks on the improve into early next week.

With all the bait that has been hanging around the Palm Islands and inshore reefs there have been some really nice GT’s getting caught on stick-baits and poppers. These fish put up a great fight and are excellent sports fish, and will definitely give your arms a workout. Focusing your time around the current points and where the bait is schooling up, this is usually where the GT’s will be hanging. Don’t be surprised if you hook a few nice Spanish mackerel in the same areas as well.

In the creeks after the small patches of rain we’ve had the bait has started to gather in good quantities, the thread-fin salmon have been around in decent numbers. There have also been plenty of sold mangrove jacks and fingermark kicking around, which is great news for lure fisherman still keen to cast a few smaller hard bodies and/or soft plastics amongst the snags, as well jigging vibes in the deeper holes and ledges around the mouths of the creeks, always putting up a hard fight. We’ve also been hearing the crabs have been on the move with good numbers making their way into the pots and the quality has been good, well worth taking the pots with you when heading up the local creek.
Braith was super excited to land this metre long catfish his biggest fish to date.
