Report 3/2/17

Post by subeditor » Fri Feb 03, 2017 3:09 pm

There are many keen fishos around the north celebrating the opening of the Barra season. The tides this weekend are a little on the neapish side, but hopefully with a bit of push from the rain that’s been around (hopefully it keeps up), the fish will fire up. During the smaller tides focussing the majority of your time on ledges where there is any current or movement in the water is your best bet, the bait will be here and so will the bigger predators.

There’s stormy weather on the horizon and the mangrove jacks are on the bite in a big way. Plenty of lure fisherman have reported big numbers of jacks in the snags and pressure points. Smaller profile soft plastics and weedless rigged soft plastics are the better options and have been producing the goods. With thick cloud cover potentially being around, don’t be afraid to try different colours, retrieves or water depths as well. The Zerek live shrimp is a great go to, as a pre rigged weedless soft plastics, they are very popular.

The fingermark out in the bay have still been on the chew. When there is a small window in the weather there have been some boats getting amongst a couple of nice sized fish. Both at night time and during the day, soft plastics and vibes work well, but it’s hard to go past live squid for the bigger fish. In the same spots there have been reports of small mouth nannygai in plague proportions. There has been the odd Spanish mackerel (around the 25kg mark) getting caught around the headlands and islands recently. This isn’t as unusual as most would think for this time of year, there are a few theories around but there are definitely smaller schools of bigger mackerel that spend majority of their time in the one area, either out around a single reef, or hanging inshore around the headlands.

NEW PRODUCT - STUMP JUMPER MEGA

The latest addition to the Stump Jumper series of lures is the new Mega Stump Jumper.

This specialty lure is a serious lure for those chasing fish at specific depths. With the quality of technology evolving with side scan and almost TV quality pictures in sounders this lure allows anglers to hit specific depths with ease and slow troll in the strike zone for longer and better results. A patented removable bib system gives anglers every advantage now rather than relying on the fish to be over active and chasing a lure at a depth that the fish aren’t.

Locally these lures are going gang busters trolling the basin for big dam Barra.
