Report 17/2/17

Don't forget we will beat any of our competitors prices on all things fishing. Tackle World Townsville is a locally owned family business.

With the neap tides this weekend the key to finding fish will be tidal flow and regardless of where you are looking a wetting a line if you can find the areas with at least a little tidal run your chances of catching some nice fish will increase significantly.

It looks like the winds could drop out over the weekend if this happens and you are heading offshore look for the areas between reefs that often form a bottle neck and during these types of tides these areas are often the best places to fish when it comes to chasing both reef fish and pelagics. The last time the winds dropped and the tides where neap many of the boats that got to the reef reported mixed results with coral trout making up the larger proportion of the catch with the reds being a little hit and miss. When it comes to red emperor and large-mouth nannygai this time off year the guys willing to do the miles and fish the deeper waters closer to the outer shelf seem to report more consistent catches of bigger fish.

The neap tides can often have their advantages when it comes to chasing fingermark on plastics and soft vibe style lures as many of the areas that produce these fish often become unfishable due to tidal run. These areas are easily fished on the neaps allowing you to keep your lure in contact with the bottom were the fish will be feeding. This also works well for those that like to jig the wrecks and with good reports of cobia lately it could be a great option this weekend.

With the nice rain we have had there should be plenty of mud crabs around once the tides improve later next week. The creeks and rivers have been a little difficult lately with it being some hot but hopefully the rain will cool things down and get the bait moving. If we get enough rain things should start to happen and we should see some nice Barra and jacks getting caught in coming weeks. I have heard of a few reports of prawns in the creeks but it can often be foolish to mention prawns as it is often luck of the draw and once you have heard about them in a report like this it is usually too late as they are often gone as fast as they came.

With the changes in the tide this weekend around sunrise and sunset it is likely that the peak bite times will be the few hours around these times. So if you are hitting the water this weekend plan to at least have your lines in the water between 6 and 8 morning and evening for best results.

Have a great weekend
