Report 4/5/17

Post by subeditor » Thu May 04, 2017 3:23 pm

We can’t catch a break lately with strong winds forecast this weekend so most of the action will be in the creeks and rivers. It’s not all that bad as there have been some good reports of big grunter in and around many of the creeks.
Jess had a great day on the water fishing off Bowen on her second ever fishing trip and did it in style beating all the blokes with this impressive fingermark.

The tides look ideal for chasing grunter this weekend on the lead up to the full moon next Thursday it looks good for chasing big grunter around the mouths of the creeks as the tide pushes in over the flats. I have said it plenty of times but area of shell in the bank are prime grunter spots. Fresh bait like large prawns and mullet fillet make great baits. Reels with a bait runner feature work especially well when chasing big grunter; as they can be a little finicky sometimes. These reels allow you to put very little pressure on the line and give the bigger grunter that little bit more time to take the bait without feeling the weight of the line. This often results in more hookups on bigger fish.

There have been quite a few reports of good grunter and flathead along the beaches with Alva Beach in the Burdekin and Cungulla Beach towards the Salmon creek end fishing quite well lately. Prawn imitation soft plastics work well in these situations, the Zerek Live Shrimp is a great option with a very natural action and colours, and is very convenient all rigged up ready to fish straight out of the packet. This time of year, after a stint of calmer weather usually, the water along these beaches will tend to clean up quite significantly, when this is the case, consider using a lighter leader than you may usually, giving yourself a far better chance of enticing a bite.
Charlotte and her dad Richard hit the water near Cardwell over the May long weekend and had a ball with Charlotte catching this nice Salmon.

The mud crabs have been around in good numbers and are of a good quality usually through this time of year. The prime spots to set the pots have been over the flats around the top of the tide and the smaller creek mouths as the tide drops out of the mangroves.

Although the winds are up this weekend it is well worth mentioning that there are good signs of a great mackerel season ahead with good catches already being reported in many of the usual locations. Recent catches around the mack patches and Maggie shoals and even some larger fish caught trolling wog head rigged gar and deep diving lures around the headlands at Cape Cleveland and the Palms.
