Report 25/5/17

Post by Nicole Penfold » Fri May 26, 2017 4:15 pm

Reports from this week have shown a few School and Spanish Mackerel starting to show up around the shipping pylons and the common spots around Halifax Bay. Methods of capture have included trolling small to medium shallow diving hard bodied lures, and casting metal slugs. For the bait anglers, pilchards have been producing some quality fish. Floating them out into a burley trail of tuna oil, pallets and cut up pilchard pieces has been working effectively.

Good reports of whiting have been caught fishing land based along the flats of Bushland Beach and Cungulla. Walking the flats on the incoming tide with freshly dug yabbies’ or peeled prawns can be effective. Once the weed clears chasing these fish on little poppers and light tackle can be fun to fill in a few hours and gather a nice feed.

In the creeks there has been captures Barramundi, Fingermark and Grunter. Barramundi are starting to school up around the mouth of the creeks in and around the bay. Targeting these fish on vibe and prawn style lures has been most effective. Especially this time of year, during the cooler months, generally the barras will be feeding on smaller bait, remaining persistent is the key during this period, as they may be a little slower and harder to get to bite, but they will. Best tip – smaller profile soft plastics and hard bodies worked a lot slower than you may usually, suspending hard bodies are a great option, being able to stop and pause on your retrieve and have the hard body remain in the ‘strikezone’. The Zerek Tango Shad 69mm and 89mm in suspending are a great little go to and have been working a treat, ticking all the boxes!

The bit of rain that we had last week has flushed out the mud crabs and got them on the move recently, with the best results coming from pots set out around the mouths of the creeks and even towards the beaches. Most cabs appear to be almost full, but there has been a lot of jenny crabs making their way into the pots, so is important to double check your crabs, as there have been a lot of big jenny’s kicking around.
