THE ROUNDUP
There has been some excellent fishing in the past couple of weeks, for all the offshore, inshore and creek going anglers. A variety of species have been seen in good numbers and sizes. NQ winters are a spectacular time of year to be on the water. The mackerels have been around in really good numbers, both schoolie (doggie) and Spanish mackerel taking trolled baits and lures. Dropping small metal slices along side the marker pylons in the shipping channel has been working a treat on the smaller doggie mackerel. Rigged garfish with squid skirts and bullet heads or the traditional wog head rig have been working well for Spanish mackerel and large spottie mackerel on the inshore shoals.

Large mouth nannygai and coral trouts have been caught in numbers on the shoals as well. So it’s well worth noticing hard bottom and showings of fish tight to the bottom on your sounder whilst trolling for pelagic, be it marlin or mackerel, as it’s quite common that the bait that these fish are feeding on will hold in areas where nannygai and trouts are haunting this time of year, so mark the area and head back to bottom fish with baits or jigs.

The beaches have also been fishing well, with the calmer conditions inshore and along the beaches with the cleaner water, it’s a great time of year to get the kids out to catch a few fish. There have been plenty of good sized whiting, big flathead and heaps of breams taking fresh baits, with fresh local peeled prawns or freshly pumped yabbies the pick of the baits to produce the best fish. When bait fishing for whiting using a small amount of red tube and a red bead will definitely help as an extra attractant to your rig. Casting small poppers and stick-baits around is a great way to target whiting as they are a highly aggressive feeder. The best lure on the market by far for this is the Ebi Panic from Jackson Lures, with a natural selection of colours and great erratic action, but best of all is the hooks on these, as they prove to have a highly successful hook up rate.
