Repot 12/10/17

We have been blessed with some fantastic weather of late and it looks as though there is still a little more to come and with this the reef has been the place to be, so majority of the reports coming in have been from offshore. Those fishing the outside edges of the reefs have been seeing success, catching plenty of trout, nannygai and red throats, and the odd nice red emperor thrown in the mix at night time as well. Well dressed metal jigs have been working an absolute treat accounting for many bigger catches of trouts and reds during the day. Adding squid skirts to the assist hooks on a metal jig is a neat way to attract more bites from fish like trouts, nannygai and red emperor.

Those trolling around the reefs for pelagics have also been having a ball, catching plenty of mackerel (some upwards of 25kg+), dolphin fish, yellow fin tuna, and wahoo have also been in numbers out just a little bit wider. Skirted lures, bibbed minnows and bibless high speed lures have all been working nicely. Looking for bird action and fish busting the surface is key to know where the pelagic are haunting, sometimes this isn’t quite obvious, birds are a big key indicator even if the fish aren’t breaking the surface, they see fish and bait down deep and will usually fly along current lines which also hold the bigger predators. For the heavy tackle game fisherman, out towards the shelf the odd giant black marlin has been raised, hooked or tagged, taking both big lures and baits. This time of year is prime time to target the big marlin out on the shelf.

October is probably one of the best months when it comes to chasing big grunter and this weekend looks exceptionally good in terms of the tides and moon phase. Bowling Green Bay, West Point and Red Rock Bay just inside the Cape should produce nice grunter over the next few days. Squid baits or fresh mullet strips are ideal baits for chasing big grunter. They can be a little touchy at times and this is where a bait runner reel comes into its own. Depending on where you are but as a general rule the hour or so after or before the bottom or top of the tides seems to be the best bite times.

David had a real fight on his hands landing this big cod while fishing of Cape Cleveland. It was great to hear it was released OK to fight another day.

Don’t dismiss the creeks this weekend, even though the weather is good enough to hit up the reef again, with the close of the barra season creeping up, and the weather heating up quickly the fish have been biting with some really good catches of both big barras and quality mangrove jacks. Lures are a great option to target those more aggressive and usually sort after species such as the mangrove jack and barramundi. Soft plastics are a great option for those looking to get into casting lures around, as most are now able to be rigged up weedless and semi snag proof, this gives you the confidence to get in tight to the structure where the fish hold up.
