Report 14/12/17

Post by subeditor » Thu Dec 14, 2017 11:12 am

Hi everyone there has been some good opportunities to get offshore in recent days and it still look ok up until sometime over the weekend when we should see an increase in the winds.
The bay has been fishing quite with reports of plenty of squid around lately it has brought the fingermark on also. As the winds increase over the weekend it looks like the creeks and rivers will be the places to go with plenty of report of late coming from the creeks south around the Burdekin producing some nice crabs. The fish has also been quite good with plenty of Mangrove Jack will to take well-presented baits. Small minnow style lures and paddle tail soft plastics have also been working well as the tide drops out of the mangroves.

Jake had a great day out on the water recently catching plenty of tuna but to top it all off while casting a popper at a current line this monster Mahi Mahi smashed it.

Craig hit the water recently heading to one of his favourite reefs with the whole family and had a ball landing a bunch of Spanish Mackerel like these two.

Still good numbers of Bar-Cheek Trout around at the moment with good quality fish around the Palm Islands and the Islands throughout Halifax Bay just check to see if there is any restriction in these areas before heading out. Small stick baits cast up into the shallows and worked off the coral edges have been working will on these fish in recent weeks.

Mathew managed to get this big gold spot cod on board for a photo before releasing it on a recent trip with AFS Sport Fishing Charters to one of the shoals just south of Cape Cleveland.

Last weekend there was good reports of Spanish mackerel on the shoals and reefs which is great news as it is starting to get a little late in the year for them. There are also plenty of tuna around at the moment which can be a heap of fun but can also be very frustrating trying to get close enough to land a cast. The key to chasing these tune schools is to 1 use a metal that is very similar in size to the bait they are feeding on and 2 try to predict the direction they are traveling and set up in a spot and let them come to you rather that chasing them all over the place.
