Report 14th Oct 05

Post by Brad » Sat Oct 15, 2005 6:01 am

The fishing has been very productive over the past week with good tides and good boating conditions.

In the rivers and creeks there was a hot run on the barramundi mid-week and by the end of the week the mangrove jack came on the chew as the tides increased in momentum. Smaller queenfish and GT's to 2kg have also been welcome by-catch. Bait is getting harder to find as the weather warms up, with sardines being the best bait if you can find them, followed by mullet.

Our surrounding headlands are having a good run on the spotted and school mackerel and the rising tide is the best time, especially if you can match this during the morning.

On the reef, local anglers had a blast on the Spanish mackerel at Satellite and Batt Reefs. Thrown in as well were some sledge hammer GT's to 25lb. Trolling deep diving Halco lures and floating pilchards have been the techniques used. Coral trout and small mouth nannygai are still common catches for bottom bashers fishing in 25m plus waters.

Game fishing operators are starting to limber back into Port Douglas after having fished the Ribbon Reefs near Lizard Island. Best reports are indicating marlin to 900lb from local operators, with an average of one fish being tagged per day. We'll have more on this as the local fleet returns over the weekend.

The weekend weather looks good on the approach of the full moon, so reports should be healthy over the next few days.
