Report Tues 24th Oct 06

Post by Brad » Wed Oct 25, 2006 7:50 pm

It hasn't been a great month at all with driving winds and rains making conditions rough, dirty and keeping water temperatures down. In fact it has been the worst October experienced by many.
There are no reef reports due to reef closures but the word from the authorities is that the coral trout having been spawning right on cue. We'll see if the same occurs next month during the second phase of closures. The reef opens tomorrow again but we need some calm days to explore the blue water.
In the rivers and creeks a few barra have been taken closer to the mouths of systems using live bait and there are plenty of grunter, bream and bread and butter species further up. The problem is that water temperatures are hovering around 25 degrees where it should be around the 30 degree mark at this time of year, which is more conducive for barra, jacks and fingermark to bite.
Boats are now filtering back from the Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament and the general consensus is that the bite was slow this year. A few boats didn't even tag a marlin, whilst others scored one or two. Conditions were rough and testing on skippers and crew. Other fish to be caught included dolphin fish, wahoo and dog tooth tuna to 50kg plus.
