The trade mark south easterlies have arrived however not quite to full strength. Reef fishing trips have still been running for bigger craft with reports of nannygai, coral trout and good scores of mackerel on the burst. May tends to be the start of the reef fishing season as the water temperature drops and will only improve. Game fisherman are also reports good catches of mackerel, tuna, giant trevally and a few instances with small black marlin and sailfish.

Inshore the last of the barra are on the chew before the cooler nights arrive. They are mainly smaller barra with odd keeper to 70cm. Mangrove jack, gold spot cod and bream appear to the most consistent catches of late. The first of the run in tide is worth fishing.
The $80,000 Carnivale Fishing Bonanza is underway for 10 days between 18th -27th May. The $50,000 tagged barra is certainly stirring the juices with a few hundred fisherman expected to sign up to catch this elusive fish. We'll keep you posted as results of the competition come in.
