Weekly Report 23 Oct 08

With unusually high winds for this time of year, combined with reef closures, reports are slim at the moment. River and game fishing are your options. River: some really solid grunter have been caught on the Daintree River flats up to 60cm consistently. The Dickson inlet has been consistent for smaller - mid sized trevally, with jacks active amongst the snags. Barra catches are being recording late afternoon and into the evening in this system as well. Fingermark are consistent in most local systems in deeper sections with structure. The neap tides and the top of the tide are the best times to target these fish. There are a lot of hatchlings in our waters and fly fisherman are doing well imitating these small fry catching tarpon, trevally and queenfish.

Game: local fleets still continue to produce marlin each trip with more regular catches around the 800lb mark. There are still plenty around the 250-450lb, yet no-one has seen a grander yet. This will be just around the corner one would expect. Strike rates are averaging two tagged fish each trip, with plenty of near misses. The top of Opal Ridge has yielded good results and Linden Banks are fishing consistently. It has been a top season to date and will get better during November.
