Weekly Report 27 Feb 09

With plenty of rain in the area fishing the rivers and creeks has been
challenging. Calm offshore waters have still been conducive to reef fishing
which seems to be the best bet at the moment.

Reef - coral trout are patchy but biting best leading into new and full moon
periods. Nannygai both large and small are still consistent in 30m plus of
water especially on the turn of the tide. Sweetlip are abundant and there
have been some really impressive red emperor catches as well. Slatey bream
and chinaman fish, although considered not good eating are turning up in
solid numbers at least providing some hard fought angling.

Game - trolling days are hard work with only smatters of spanish mackerel
being caught. There is the odd tuna school working in the paddocks. Sharky
mackerel and barracuda are also consistent by-catch. Sourcing bait on the
sounder and then working that area hard is your best bet.

River - has had periods of shutting down after a big rainfall. Once cleared
to a certain degree there are a lot of mid sized barra being caught, mainly
on lures. Mangrove jack, grunter and flathead have been posted using dead
baits. Live baiting is working well for fingermark in deeper sections with
structure.
