Weekly Report 28 Oct 09

Post by Brad » Wed Oct 28, 2009 8:23 am

The past week saw the winds abate allowing fishing explorations to be unhindered but this could be short lived as blustery conditions are forecast to return. If this is the case, heading over the range to Lake Tinaroo could be a viable option for the Lake Tinaroo Barra Bash tournament where there will be a healthy prize pool on offer this coming weekend. This event attracts hundreds every year and is also a great social occasion camping on the foreshore. The scouts tell me there is already a strong contingency from the region heading up for the bash and best of luck to them all.

On the local scene the reef fishing has just gone through a real patchy period with mediocre catches being recorded particularly during the neap tides. Smatterings of coral trout, sweetlip and spangled emperor have been the common catches. There has been better results on the Spanish mackerel around Snapper Island and Satellite Reef. With the winds due to arrive again it will be hard to gauge whether proceedings will have improved with better tides. The barra season is due to close this coming weekend on the 1st November so you have a couple of days to snare one or two for the freezer. Best reports are coming from the river mouths where quite a few barra are venturing to in anticipation of more rain to come. You can't substitute a nice juicy live bait to entice one of these beauties onto the end of your line.

Further upstream there are steady reports of mangrove jack being caught amongst the snags using fresh dead baits and even further into the systems the trevally and tarpon are in aggressive moods. Casting small lures or poppers using light gear has seen anglers have a ball targeting these species. With the build up to more expected rain our rivers and creeks should experience a burst of activity in the coming weeks. To get amongst the serious action on offer give us a call.
