Weekly Report 11 Nov 09

Post by Brad » Wed Nov 11, 2009 1:33 pm

This month to date has been a frustrating one particularly for those wanting to head offshore. Typically November offers great boating conditions but instead we have been inundated with a series of high pressure systems creating gusty conditions. Reef reports have been slim recently but those who braved the elements are still seeing good results on the coral trout and in deeper water the large mouth nannygai. A few other species have turned up at times including numbers of gold spot trevally which are a good chew, sizeable gold spot cod, plenty of stripeys and the not so popular slately bream which have to be eaten fresh as they don't freeze well. It is interesting to note that the mackerel run is continuing nicely with quite a few healthy specimens taken on floating pilchard or live bait gang hooks.

A lot of attention has turned to our rivers and creeks due to the weather and there are a variety of fish being recorded. Grunter, mangrove jack, bream, barracuda and juvenile jewfish have been common catches. With a bit of rain around this has stirred up our systems putting fish in an aggressive mood. The past week has been a good time to place the crab pots with a bit of freshwater around and catches have been quite reasonable for those putting in the time. Our marlin fleets continue to battle on in adverse conditions and are still finding the bite. The conditions have been fresh to frightening at times and most action has been recorded late in the afternoon and at times right on dark. Linden Bank and Opal Ridge are still the prime areas to target. Congratulations to local boats Spartacus and Joe Joe which came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the recent Lizard Island tournament. This tournament is the most prestigious for black marlin in the southern hemisphere.
