Weekly Report 25 Nov 09

Post by Brad » Wed Nov 25, 2009 10:39 am

It's looking like we are in the midst of a typical build up to the wet season with warm sunny days, calm conditions and a good dose of rain. All these are great ingredients for the fishing scene to fire. Offshore just in the last few days the big, big marlin are turning up with regularity at Linden Bank. There has been a good supply of mid sized marlin date but now the big girls are turning up the heat. Following the marlin blog each day there has been several incidents of epic encounters with 1000lb fish. There is a lot of traffic on the shelf with up to 18 boats working the area at the one time. It has been an awesome season and hopefully it is only just starting to peak with plenty of good fishing to come.

Following the reef closures last week the fish came back on the chew with a vengence. The coral trout have been super keen since then and many are coming in at the 3-5kg mark. With much calmer conditions on offer being able to fish deeper has assisted sourcing large mouth nannygai and red emperor. I wouldn't say they are going off, but the norm has been to pluck half a dozen nice big species at each spot before the bite slows. Sharks at times have also impeded efforts when targeting the reds. Other species to turn up have included sweetlip, tea-leaf trevally, slatey bream and there are still mackerel hitting the float at around the 6-10kg mark.

With a good dumping of rain on our coastal ranges this has converted to increased activity in our rivers and estuaries. There is a good supply of food spread right throughout our systems and a variety of fish are actively feeding. Reports have been steady this past week with mangrove jack, trevally, queenfish, grunter, tarpon and fingermark being the most common catches. The next few weeks will offer the most consistent fishing inshore before any substantial rainfalls occur. With procedures in full flight give us a call to get amongst the serious action on offer.
