Weekly Report 11 May 10

Post by Brad » Tue May 11, 2010 8:13 am

It seems like it has been an eternity, but the sun is shining and we have moderate sea breezes on the table. Hopefully this trend can continue to improve because we've just gone through a torrid stretch of nasty weather. The river and creeks showed a good return to form as the rainfalls fell away. There has been a good smattering of fish on the go and the incoming tides are seeing the most action. There are still a few barra poking their heads around and the contiuation of warmer days has seen them show up in the afternoons as the water temperature peaks for the day. You can just start to feel a bit of a nip in the air at night and sooner or later we will experience that cold snap which makes you scurry through the wardrobe looking for a sweater and in turn can put the barra into the winter slumber mode. Other than the odd barra there have been mangrove jack, fingermark, queenfish, medium sized Gt's on the chew and even small school mackerel are making an appearance around the entrances. If the weather can behave itself for a bit the entrances of all our local systems will offer some good angling.

Offshore, the fishing has been conducted in mostly harsh windy conditions over the past week. Despite the challenges involved there were some very impressive catches recorded. The large mouth nannygai have really changed their tune and are snapping their heads off in the deeper water. I witnessed the Dragon Lady charter come in the other day with truck load of these fish all around the 6kg mark. Added to this were coral trout, gold spot trevally, mackerel and sweetlip. It was a plethora of fish covering the deck as they off loaded their catch.May traditionally is a great month for the red species and also for the mackerel to start showing their true colours. If a window of good weather presents itself my tip is to drop everything and go.
