Weekly Report 15 Mar 12

Post by Brad » Thu Mar 15, 2012 6:41 pm

Our wet season appears to have arrived albeit very late this year. Most days are seeing moderate rainfalls with the Daintree region receiving considerably more.

Rivers: a lot of fresh in the systems now and making fishing a bit challenging. Mangrove jack continue to relish in the conditions whilst other species are happy to take a low key for the moment. Fishing closer to the river mouths where the salt water pushes in is seeing slightly more action with trevally, bream and some queenfish on the move on an incoming tide. A few days in a row of no rain is what is required for the rivers and estuaries to begin to really fire again.

Outer Reef: with slightly cooler conditions on offer this has revived the reef fishing to a certain point. Catches haven't been huge in quantity but the quality is impressive. Large mouth nannygai, coral trout, trevally and a few mackerel have been the prized catches. At the moment reef fishing is definitely the best value at the moment and will gradually improve as the wet season tails off. April and May can normally see some big hauls of fish come in.
