The 3rd annual four day Port Douglas Marlin Challenge was held in the past week with 11 of the very best game fishing boats competing for honours. Conditions were rather pleasant for the duration of the tournament with 10-15 knots on offer each day. A total of 23 black marlin were tagged and released ranging from 150lb to 1000lb. Over half of the fish that were registered were between the 600lb - 1000lb mark which meant competitors got to experience some exhilarating big time marlin fishing.

Competition was fierce with the final results going down to the wire with four vessels in contention going into the last half hour of fishing. Cairns vessel Reel Impression crossed the finishing line in 1st place with 4 tagged marlin. They also secured the 1000lb fish as well. 2nd place went to local vessel Kyrenia on a count back system with 4 tagged marlin. Local vessels Joe Joe came in third with 3 tagged marlin, and Reel Chase came in 4th place with 3 tagged marlin as well. During the four days boats were spread as far south to the Jenny-Louise Shoals right up to the Ribbon Reef No. 5. Interestingly this year most fish were caught north of the Linden Bank with a couple of hot days on the bite at the bottom of the Ribbon Reefs. There was one particular day on a section of reef where 20 marlin were tagged by tournament boats and other charter vessels.

Presentations were held at the Lure Restaurant on the final night with a great time held by all. Initial discussions indicate that next year's tournament will be a money tournament with up to $20,000 cash up for grabs. This no doubt will gain the interest of many who follow the game fishing scene. There's still a good month ahead for pursuing the mighty black marlin on our local waters and reports should continue to be impressive.
