In the fishing charter world it has been a period whereby the majority of local operations have opted to do their yearly maintenance program. Tourist numbers are very low, the weather has been up and down and it is perfect timing to freshen things up before the town starts to get busy again. A lot of the vessels have been up on the slipway recently receiving their antifouling on the hulls, being coated with a fresh lick off paint and doing jobs which require the boat to be in a dry dock.

A few of the charter operations however are in full preparation mode with the likes of Port Douglas Sportfishing, Akoonah Angling and Reel Chase Charters preparing to head north to Princess Charlotte Bay for a month's worth of work. Over 40 clients from around Australia are flying in at different stages and being transported to the bay by helicopter where they'll be treated to river and reef options and the fishing is expected to be very good. There's been substantial run off from the Lakefield Plains so the barra fishing is looking promising and the reef fishing opportunities are always exceptional.

On the local front there's plenty of fresh bait within our estuaries and rivers and there's been quite a few mid sized treavlly about. The mangrove jacks have continued to fire along the mangrove banks and there's been a few barra around according to a few of the locals. With rain expected to drop off in the coming days the weekend weather looks like the best it is going to be the best we've seen for quite awhile. The tides look very handy as well and should suit all forms of angling whether it be inshore or offshore. It will be interesting to see if our beaches fire up again like they did a couple of weeks ago. Calm weather, good tides and plenty of fresh bait around all points towards one of those windows where you got to get out amongst it. No doubt the fishing reports will pick up in the coming days and there will be something more substantial to publish next week.
