Report 10/09/14

Post by Nicole Penfold » Wed Sep 10, 2014 9:47 am

During the course of the week we’ve seen some amazing fishing reports filter through on all levels.

Heading the news was a catch by local fishing identity ‘Sharky’ Shane Down who landed himself an Ornate Eagle Ray off Four Mile Beach. These rays do not inhabit our region at all and have been only spotted twice in 20 years by Shane himself whilst diving on the outer reef on our local waters. To catch one off our local beach is to put it simply an extremely rare event and it looks like this may reach further TV outlets. Shane’s previous rare sighting on the outer reef was televised on the Line Burner National TV Show on Foxtel a couple of years ago.

On the reef it’s been a bumper week on the fish with plenty of piscatorial delights coming back to the docks. Red emperor, spangled emperor, large mouth nannygai, coral trout, bar cheek trout, cobia, tea-leaf trevally, gold spot trevally, moses perch and Spanish mackerel have weighed heavily in the final outcome. Glorious conditions and some good run in the tides has been a telling factor according to Steve Adamson on the Dragon Lady Charters. On quite a few days he mentioned he had to drive away from the fish as too many were coming onboard. Once a big school of fish started biting it was mayhem particular with the large mouth and trevally species.

Damian Collete of Saltaire Charters recently proved that the small black marlin are still on the wide grounds venturing down there and securing 2 tags. He said they also jumped off a couple of others and says there’s still a bit more time left to tap into this resource. He also reported heavy catches of Spanish mackerel and large mouth nannygai during the course of the week.

The winds are expected to come up a little over the weekend before settling back into a stable pattern next week. With good weather ahead the fishing reports should continue to roll along nicely.
