With awesome weather back on the agenda the fishing has been nothing short of brilliant.

The reef opened back up on Sunday and there were quite a few coral trout that came back to the docks on that first day. As to be expected they were mostly prominent up in the shallower depths of 25m and less. Then the following day it was the large mouth nannygai and red emperor that turned up the tempo and they were big fish too. Steve Adamson of Dragon lady said the first day following the reef closure he was happy with the dozen or so trout they caught that day amongst with a mixed bag of other fish. He said he thought he’d try the deeper waters the next day and was astounded at the activity that unfolded. He said they caught 15 red emperor for the day of which the biggest was 11kg and followed this up with about 10 large mouth nannygai all between the 6-8kg range for the day. Add to this there an abundance of gold spot trevally and big golden trevally to add to the tally and it was one big esky overflowing with fish on the return. He said he was so relieved the sharks weren’t around this day otherwise it could have gone from riches to rags.

In the rivers Jamie Beitzel up on the Daintree River reports there are a variety of fish to be caught at the moment. The upper reaches are fishing well for jacks, the main channel still holds some big queenfish along with a swag of mid sized fish, the deeper bends are holding tarpon on the top of the tide and there are healthy catches of barra on the go.

On the game fishing scene there are still plenty of big black marlin on the bite. The currents are returning to normality after the windy period and there’s been a lot of fish caught between the 600-800lb mark. The water clarity is looking a lot better now at Linden Bank and hopefully this all leads into an exciting Port Douglas Marlin Challenge next week.
