Report 13/11/14

Post by subeditor » Thu Nov 13, 2014 10:53 am

The 2014 Port Douglas Marlin Challenge came to its conclusion on Sunday and was deemed a great success by those who participated and the four day tournament will be remembered for great weather and catching big fish. 13 vessels competed for honours and collectively as a fleet acquired 31 hookups on black marlin for a conversion rate of 13 completed tags. 7 of these fish were in excess of 700lb with the biggest marlin caught by female angler Sue Ahlers estimated at 850lb. However this tournament is about tagging the most fish and this year’s champion angler went to Doug Cope aboard Wild Turkey from NSW who prior to the event said that a flathead was previously the biggest fish he had ever caught. He successfully completed 2 tagged fish and won on a countback system to beat last year’s winner, Lisa Goodwin aboard Above Grade who also completed 2 tagged fish. The champion boat winner was a very close affair this year with four vessels all equal of 2 completed tags and was eventually awarded to Moana from Cairns with a PNG crew aboard on a countback system. There were some hard luck stories on the last day of fishing including Wild Turkey who completed a tag but unfortunately it was a sailfish which would have put them into the lead.
On the evening of the last day of the tournament a 4 course dinner presentation was held at Lure Restaurant at the marina and was enjoyed by over 80 guests.
Trophy Winners for 2014 included:
Day 1 Champion - Lionel Astwood aboard Moana
Day 2 Champion - Nobby Stratjevnz aboard Gorilla
Day 3 Champion - Louie Smith aboard Dragon Lady
Day 4 Champion - Lisa Goodwin aboard Above Grade
Champion Boat - Moana
Champion Skipper - Daniel McCarthy aboard Moana
Female Champion Angler - Lisa Goodwin aboard Above Grade
Overall Champion Angler - Doug Cope aboard Wild Turkey

Final Positions:
1st Moana – 2 tags
2nd Wild Turkey – 2 tags
3rd Rat Bag – 2 tags
4th Above Grade – 2 tags
5th Saltaire – 1 tag
