Report 28/5/15

Post by subeditor » Fri May 29, 2015 1:10 pm

As predicted the winds picked up dramatically over the weekend and have remained steady since. Pretty much the last offshore opportunity occurred at the end of last week where the fishing continued to power on in the better conditions. The form fish of late is no doubt the coral trout which is always a favourite for many. Dragon Lady Charters were able to pick up 20+ fish per trip and they were mainly around the 3-4kg mark which is a very tidy specimen. Skipper Steve said over those couple of days they were relatively easy pickings as each location produced 6-8 nice trout along with other bits and pieces. He said they large mouth nannygai hangs were quieter fish wise because there was a population of sharks around which did not allow many fish on the end of the line get past their noses. In saying this the sharks did allow quite a few gold spot trevally to get by and they were only interested in the colour red. Other than this other quality fish to return to the docks included cobia, Spanish mackerel and bread and butter species such as sweetlip and stripies.
With the weather on the nose attention has turned to the rivers and creeks for the moment and there’s been some reasonable activity in this department. Jake Wyatt of Port Douglas Sportfishing reports the Dickson Inlet has its fair share of mangrove jack, grunter, smaller trevally and plenty of eager big fat bream. A bit further north Jamie Beitzel reports the Daintree River has been fishing exceptionally well and has encountered barra, fingermark, grunter and the big 1m queenfish are back in the system. He thought the fishing might have tailed off a tad but instead he’s been more than happy with the way the river is fishing.
Conditions are predicted to settle again over the weekend hopefully back down to the 10 knot mark which will once again open up a few more doors for all styles of angling.
