Report 5/6/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Jun 05, 2015 2:13 pm

It’s been another sound week of fishing our local waterways and the most noise continues to come from the outer reefs. The weather never really settled to expectations over the past week and there was a bit of precipitation about as well. So it was left to the bigger craft to head offshore and from most reports they came up trumps. Leading into the full moon the coral trout and bar cheek trout went into overdrive and were caught in multiple numbers day after day. Steve Adamson of Dragon Lady Charters said that it was quite phenomenal at times and certain marks were producing 6-9 big fish at a time. He said that they weren’t your run of the mill sized fish but pushing up to your 6kg range which is a lump of a trout. He said in the past week their quietest day saw 20+ trout return with their best day recording 35 fish. He said there were other fish on the go and they ran across good numbers of small mouth nannygai which seemed to have made a welcomed return to the area. The large mouth they caught were just legal in size and numbers were a little bit down. He said for the last couple of months they’ve experienced big returns on the bigger large mouth but in more recent times they have taken a back seat. The red emperor were quite prolific in the past week except the majority were just undersize between 50-55cm. They did however return with quite a few good keepers. There seemed to a few Spanish mackerel around and they were able to catch 2-3 per trip on a floating rig. Besides these trophy fish the sweetlip they caught were bigger than usual and there were golden trevally, cobia and spangled emperor in amongst the mix as well.
Unfortunately the immediate forecast predicts more stronger winds and doesn’t look like settling till after the weekend.
