report 3/7/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Jul 03, 2015 2:42 pm

Persistent winds and coastal rain once again saw anglers faced with a series of challenges over the past week. The bigger vessels continued to take on those challenges offshore but the small boat brigade couldn’t get past the harbour leads under these conditions.
The middle of the day low tide did offer some reprieve on the reef and despite the constant wind gusts fish catches remained fairly positve across the board. At times when the winds abated fishing a bit deeper became viable and when they were up hugging in close to the reefs became the only option. Thus the catches were varied as Dragon Lady Charters discovered over the course of the week. Skipper Steve said they picked up some nice red emperor and large mouth when they ventured to deeper pastures and when forced back into the shallows there were enough coral trout, moses perch, spangled emperor and sweetlip to keep the tally ticking over. He said it certainly hasn’t been ideal and they’ve had to chop and change their strategy to stay in tune to the weather conditions. Looking ahead he thinks it will remain a bit of a battle in the short term and you can only do your best.
On the light tackle scene Saltaire Charters returned to charter work after an extensive re-fit and found themselves amongst the small black marlin action. Skipper Damian Collete said late last week they got 3 fish out of 4 strikes on the wide grounds south of Port Douglas and was quite pleased with this result. He said the fish have turned up very early this year and if they remain in their current state through to September he expects some serious numbers of small black marlin to be caught and released during this light tackle season. Give us a good run of weather and it will be game on.
