Report 14/8/15

Post by subeditor » Fri Aug 14, 2015 3:37 pm

Following the weekend the region experienced a magnificent run of weather for a few days which would have to close to idyllic as you could get. Light variable winds, a cobalt blue ocean and plenty of sunshine was the right recipe to head offshore for a spot of fishing.
According to Skipper Steve of Dragon Lady charters the very beginning of the week was a touch slow but the following days quickly kicked into gear as the new moon approached. Catch rates exploded and Steve said the punters caught more fish than what they could hope for. He said sometimes you catch a certain amount which is ample and it might be only half way through the trip and basically from this point on you only keep a handful of selected fish. What kept the crew busy was a mixture of fish with the prized species leading the way including coral trout and small and large mouth nannygai. There was also a considerable amount of action of the mackerel float with hefty numbers of Spanish being shared amongst the group each day. Spangled emperor, stripies, reef mangrove jack and moses perch topped up the esky to add a bit more variety.
Along the coast a couple of the smaller boat charters are claiming some really good action on mackerel and trevally schools along our inshore reefs. Casting and jigging slices and soft plastics has been a deadly technique. The weather has been just perfect for the small boat brigade but they will be forced back to calmer waters for several days to come as freshening winds will take a stranglehold till the start of next week.
By the time the next batch of decent weather arrives we will be back to neapish tides which is ideal for fishing deep on the reef for nannygai and inshore the Daintree River relishes under these conditions.
