Report 27/8/15

It’s been a delightful period to be up in the tropics and there’s been ample opportunity to hit the blue highway of late.
Last week we mentioned that the Cairns Bluewater Billfish Tournament was taking place that weekend and we had a small contingency of boats representing our Port. Over the three days of fishing two of our local charters came up trumps taking out 1st & 2nd places competing against 49 other vessels. Brett Goetze skippering Amokura came first with 8 marlin tags and Damian Colette skippering Saltaire came 2nd with 7 marlin tags. Over the course of the tournament just on 100 small black marlin were tagged and released with the Oyster Reef vicinity proving to be a hot location. I was talking with Brett during the course of the last day and Amokura and Saltaire were level pegging on 6 marlin each with a couple of hours left in the tournament. Luckily for Brett and his team they remained hooked up to their next two bites. Talking with Damian he got three bites in this last period and only completed the one tag. He said with a bit more luck the result could have swung in his favour. Both local skippers were extremely proud of their team efforts and glad to bring back up the highway the bragging rights for this annual tournament.
In other news the reef fishing has been powering on in the calm conditions. Steve Adamson said it hasn’t been too difficult to collate good numbers of fish with coral trout still at the forefront as the most prominent fish to be caught. The nannygai have been fair with the odd big fish in amongst the schools, Spanish mackerel continue to flow over the side at a steady rate and there’s been a few not so common catches including massive reef mangrove jack, baldy bream and bowen snapper.
Looking ahead the weather forecast looks nothing but sensational for the next 5 days as we approach the full moon period. Happy Days !
